A worthy description of today’s Left in America: Empathy and sympathy without a moral sense

This is one of the better explanations of the emotional and moral status of many of our Leftist brethren:

A human being devoid of the ability to empathize or sympathize with others is a moral monster. We label people like this as sociopaths because we understand that there is something fundamentally wrong with them.

As vital as empathy and sympathy are, though, they carry a great danger. Emotion unanchored by a moral sense can lead to much harm. There is vast moral chasm between empathizing with the victim of a serial killer and the serial killer himself. And it is possible to over-empathize with others, to subordinate yourself to the emotional weather of other people to such a degree that your own emotions and feelings get dulled or even lost…….

…..For the left, empathy and sympathy often eclipse morality entirely. It’s not a cliche to say that most leftists are governed by their feelings, for this is observably the case. To most of the left — becoming more pronounced the further left ideologically you go — the moral sense is atrophied to near-uselessness. The left has come to view morality with a deadly kind of skepticism, a postmodern cultural-relativist suspiciousness that shrinks and shrivels the moral sense. Empathy and sympathy reign supreme. To a person of the left, “right” and “wrong” exist not as moral poles, but as emotional ones: what’s right is what feels right, in the moment.

But when decision-making is driven by in-the-moment emotion, consequences are often ignored. We see this all the time from “activists” on the left. They act without thinking of the consequences, which are often harmful to the very people they claim to want to help. They are governed by their passions.

James Dobson is RIGHT on Obama!

“I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” Dobson said (about Obama)…………..

“He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter.”

Truer words never spoken in the recent campaign!

I am wondering how long it will take the media and the George Soros/Huffington lefties to demand that Dobson apologize for “criticizing the holy Obama”?

(Remember these are the same types who thought Reverend Wright was spot on in his denouncing of white Americans, this country, and even Hillary Clinton.)

You can read more at CNN Political Ticker .  The quotes below are from an article in the Las Vegas Sun (NOTE: when I first posted, I had a bad link to the Sun, and now can’t find the link….but the info below came from that article.  More info is at the CNN link above.)

Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama’s argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion’s terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the “lowest common denominator of morality,” labeling it “a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution.”

“Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?” Dobson said. “What he’s trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe.”

That is the nail on the head there by Dobson….the relative morality and relative view of Christianity of the left is summed up in that sentence.  It also includes reference to Obama and the left’s need to silence and neuter those of us who are Christians of the Bible who believe “Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!”.

Perhaps Dobson was rightfully responding to many of the misguided and distorted views of Christians held by Obama for years.

From Breitbart in 2007 at United Church of Christ convention (Same church denomination of Reverend Wright and Obama if that tells you anything!):

Sen. Barack Obama told a church convention …..that some right-wing evangelical leaders have exploited and politicized religious beliefs in an effort to sow division.

He should know…he’s the master at that tactic.  More:

“Somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked,”

“At every opportunity, they’ve told evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage, school prayer and intelligent design”.

“I don’t know what Bible they’re reading, but it doesn’t jibe with my version.”

The height of pomposity……he’s right about his version of the Bible, though….it doesn’t jibe at all with the Christian Bible most Americans are familiar with.

And I guess gay marriage and abortion rammed down the throats of evangelical Christians and conservatives by liberal, left-wing judges can’t be considered as disrespecting the values of Christians and the laws of God……Also, the assault on churches and what can be preached from the pulpit is a clear threat to the institutions and values of traditional Christians in this country.

Or read a portion of Obama’s 2006 speech to United Church of Christ:

“When we discuss religion only in the negative sense of where or how it should not be practiced, rather than in the positive sense of what it tells us about our obligations towards one another; when we shy away from religious venues and religious broadcasts because we assume that we will be unwelcome — others will fill the vacuum, those with the most insular views of faith, or those who cynically use religion to justify partisan ends,” Obama said. “In other words, if we don’t reach out to evangelical Christians and other religious Americans and tell them what we stand for, then the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons and Alan Keyeses will continue to hold sway.”

How’s that for unifying? I thought Obama was supposedly the one to unify.  Just two years ago, he insinuates that the conservative Christians need to be neutered and cynically refers to using religion for partisan ends….

Maybe most troubling there is his reference to religion “tells us about our obligations towards one another.”  From his words there, it is an arrogant mindset to think that “evangelical Christians and other religous Americans” are sheep that simply follow what the “radical Christians” (in his mind) tell them to do.

And Obama assumes that only his view is correct and he is the Superman to save us all….and that view contains the notion that relative morality, feel-good religion, and government are the means to fulfill those obligations.  Apparently they are not being met by most Americans who are merely sheep blinded by their wrong and negative view of religion!

Obama uses race and religion for partisan ends….more hypocrisy from the self-appointed “chosen one”.

UPDATE 6/24/08 – A great post from La Shawn Barber outlining the Old Testament and New Testament purposes as it pertains to Obama’s misinterpretation of both!  Succinct and very well done.
