Do the events of the Costa Concordia indicate a sign of the times?

I know I am not the only one to wonder about this, but do the events after the capsizing of the Costa Concordia indicate a sign of the times?

I am speaking most specifically about the behaviors of those on board and those in charge.

We have a leader that, it appears, did everything possible to preserve his own backside, while he willfully allowed passengers to fend for themselves and, for some, to die.
We have citizens on board who, from some accounts, seem to have taken the “every man for himself” attitude quite literally.

It was 100 years ago this year that the Titanic sank.  From many accounts of that event, the evacuation mostly included women and children, the captain went down with the ship and many men died in order to save their families.

This year, in a similar disaster, we have reports of men racing to the front to get on the lifeboats, pregnant women forced to stay onboard, and the captain leaving ship while others are evacuated.

There is a report that the captain was “showboating” and was too close to the shore which may have caused the entire disaster.

In a time when our political leaders, like the captain, have abandoned their principles and what is best for our country, and many citizens have soaked in the class warfare of “what’s yours should  be mine”—-can we really be surprised at the behavior of people on a sinking ship?

Blogger Pundit and Pundette says it out loud on a recent blog post: What a difference a century makes“.

Men refused to prioritise women, expectant mothers and children as they pushed themselves forward to escape. Crew ignored their passengers – leaving ‘chefs and waiters’ to help out. [. . .]
‘I was standing by the lifeboats and men, big men, were banging into me and knocking the girls. It was awful. There was a total lack of organisation. There was no one telling people where to go.
‘And when we finally got into a lifeboat, people, grown men, were trying to jump into the boat. I thought, if they land in here we are going to capsize.

And the captain abandoned the ship and boarded a lifeboat while the evacuation of 4200 people was underway.

In a translation released by Reuters, Gregorio De Falco, the port captain at Livorno, is heard ordering Schettino – who said he was in a lifeboat – back to the Costa Concordia:

Coast Guard: “Listen Schettino, there are people trapped on board. Now you need to go on your life boat, under the bow of the ship on the side. There is a ladder. You need to climb up the ladder and board the ship. Get on board and report to me how many people there are. Is that clear?. . . .

Schettino: “At this moment the ship is tilted.”

Coast Guard: “I understand. Listen, there are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. . . . Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear? . . . Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!”

Schettino: “Please . . . “

Although, the CBS News article says the captain may not have acted as heinously as it first appears, one still has to wonder about the character of a captain who leaves the ship while thousands are still aboard.

Still yet, their the report that the entire accident may have occurred due to “showboating” that the captain apparently approved:

The cruise operator has said Schettino strayed from the ship’s authorized course into waters too close to the perilous reef.

The nautical version of a “fly by” was apparently a favor to the chief waiter who is from Giglio and whose parents live on the island, local media reported. Prosecutor Francesco Verusio called Schettino’s maneuver “reckless” and “inexcusable.”

But, perhaps, all is not lost.  From the CBS News article:

Corriere della Sera also reportsthat the crew mutinied, ordering passengers into lifeboats before the captain issued an abandon ship order.

And the captain has been arrested and faces potential charges of manslaughter.

What a tragedy for the families affected by this catastrophe….and a tragedy for society.

Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett spouts politics from the pulpit

Why is it that when a Democrat uses a church pulpit for politics and voter drives the Separation of Church/State crowd go silent……but when our kids say a prayer in public school, or we want a Bible in the school library,  or my pastor speak out against abortion in a pulpit —-well then the Left howls “Separation of Church and State”.

Oh and this isn’t just ANY Democrat, but Valerie Jarrett….number one friend and adviser to Obama.

The double standard is infuriating.

Political Humor – High in the Air

High In The Air

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

… The man consulted his portable GPS and Replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level.. You are 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.”
She rolled her eyes and said, “You must be a Republican.” I am,” replied the man. “How did you know?” “Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and I’m still lost.. Frankly, you’ve not been much help to me.”
The man smiled and responded, “You must be a Democrat.” “I am,” replied the balloonist. “How did you know?”
“Well,” said the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You’ve risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect ME to solve your problem. You’re in EXACTLY the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it’s MY fault…

Politics in Pageant? Miss Oklahoma supports Arizona law comes in 2nd to Miss Michigan, Hezbollah-supporter

Of course, no one should be surprised about politics in a Miss USA pageant.  It’s just that it used to be more behind the scenes.  Now it seems to be the basis upon which you are chosen

Miss Oklahoma Morgan Elizabeth Woolard, Miss USA First Runner-Up

Last night Miss Oklahoma, in her Q&A, clearly answered a loaded political question in support of the Arizona immigration law and state’s rights.  Even though she was odds-on favorite to win, she was then chosen first runner up ….to the winner, Miss Michigan, Muslim and “Arab-American”, who reportedly has ties to or supports Hezbollah.

Miss Michigan almost fell down on stage, yet still won the pageant.  I guess political correctness long ago overtook grace as a factor in these pageants?!?

Oh, and Miss Michigan also gave a politically correct answer about healthcare-funded birth control….it is OK, she believes, because it is “so costly”.

From FoxNews

During the interview portion, Fakih was also asked a question on a hot-button issue. She was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it’s costly.

“I believe that birth control is just like every other medication, even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said.

Michelle Malkin is even more clear about the “gaffetastic” Miss Michigan :

She nearly tripped over her gown.

She called birth control a “controlled substance.”

She argued that contraceptives should be covered by health insurers because they are “expensive” — and then said you could get them for “free” from your OB/GYN’s office……

…..Does this woman know what a “controlled substance” is?

More importantly: Does she even comprehend the concept of insurance? The purpose of insurance isn’t to cover every last medical expense. It’s supposed to cover events that are beyond your control. Should auto insurers now cover oil changes and satellite radio installations? I mean, hey, they’re “expensive,” too!

More on the blatant political question, which seems to be a re-run of last year’s pageant:

Miss Oklahoma Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was a top contestant for the Miss USA crown this year. But, after she came out in support of the Arizona immigration law she was forced to take a back seat to Miss Michigan. Miss Oklahoma was runner up in this year’s competition.

Here is how she handled the toughest political question of the night:

Apparently, although a great majority of Americans (62-73%) agree with her, the judges didn’t like her answer. She placed second.

Instead, Miss Michigan Rima Fakih, an Arab American whose family reportedly has strong ties to the Hezbollah terror organization, won the crown.

As one commenter at Gateway Pundit put it

Miss Fakih should have been asked how she as a muslim woman can support a religion where women are treated like animals. Why do only conservative women get asked political questions and then punished for their opinions?

Kudos to Miss Oklahoma for supporting, under stress, the Arizona Immigration law!

UPDATE: Were you a “conservationist” and preserver of earth before it was cool?

For decades, many people, including my parents and other family members, have been true “conservationists” and preservers of the earth that God gave us.  They did it LONG before it was “cool” and they do it everyday, not just one day a year when everyone is watching!!
I don’t need a politicized day every year to realize what true conservationists know and do.

And politicized it is:  Schools force “green” propaganda on our children, politicians tout the need for reducing carbon while they are escorted in LARGE SUVs and fly private jets, and the President and VP talk about “green energy” while wasting lots of the old-fashioned, carbon emitting kind on Earth Day!  Via with tip from Drudge Report today:

On a day when many Americans will be reflecting upon how they can reduce their impact on the environment, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will board separate jets in Washington on Earth Day morning to fly 250 miles up the east coast to New York, where they will land at separate airports to attend separate events within a few miles of each other.

The parallel visits of Air Force One (a 747/VC-25 aircraft) and Air Force Two (a 757/C-32A aircraft) will delay dozens, if not hundreds of commercial flights at Kennedy and LaGuardia and other nearby airports as no-fly zones are implemented. Jets will be forced to circle and burn more fuel as they wait for the VIPs to come and go. Their security contingents consisting of dozens of cars, SUVs and helicopters will burn even more. Throw in thousands of commuters’ cars and delivery trucks sitting idle in traffic as law enforcement closes large swaths of the city and you have yourself a very Earth-unfriendly day.

But amidst it all I like this reminder from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association on what our role OVER the earth consists of:

While God takes pleasure in our stewardship of His creation, He wants us to take care of one another first. We must be careful not to place more importance on plants and animals than on human life. And we must refrain from giving nature God’s rightful place in our lives – the center of our worship.

In the second part of Genesis 1:28, God tells Adam and Eve to “Rule over the fish of the sea and of the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” As humans, we are created in God’s image. No other living being – no plant or animal – has this quality. So, as we bear this divine image given to us, we are to rule over God’s created order.

While this does not give us the right to destroy earth through carelessness, this passage contradicts the school of thought by some conservationists that humans have no dominion over nature, that humans and nature have equal footing. Furthermore, we are blatantly told in Matthew 6:26 that God values us more than His own creation:

“Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?”

As believers in Christ, we are heirs and stewards of the beautiful creation God has given us. But, we also need to live in a way that is consistent with God’s heart and mind. Human beings are much more of a precious resource to God than the rest of His physical creation.

Besides, “Christ died for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8). That is the ultimate indicator of our value. To God, we are worth the life of his perfect Son.

UPDATE 4/22/10:  A great read on the Lenin-link to Earth Day and the “green” propaganda of the day.  Also refers to the welfare payments in the House-approved “Cap and Tax” bill.

Mr. “I Won” said: during campaign – “This is a war we must WIN”; Now – “worried about using the word ‘VICTORY'” in Afghanistan

Mr. “Student of History” and the so-called greatest orator of our time has this to say about the war in Afghanistan:

“I’m always worried about using the word ‘victory,’ because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohitocoming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur,” Obama told ABC News.

On September 2, 1945, on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese envoys Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and Gen. Yoshijiro Umezu signed their names on the Instrument of Surrender. The time was recorded as 4 minutes past 9 o'clock. Afterward, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Commander in the Southwest Pacific and Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, also signed. He accepted the Japanese surrender "for the United States, Republic of China, United Kingdom, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and in the interests of the other United Nations at war with Japan." (H/T: Gateway Pundit)

Aside from the fact that this self-proclaimed history buff is simply a buffoon —- Emporor Hirohito didn’t sign the surrender after WWII.

Further, as pointed out by a commenter at Gateway Pundit, the “great orator” used the word “invokes” where he should have used the word “evokes“!

(Goodness, I shudder to think if George Bush had done this — the liberals would have invoked a huge media frenzy evoking a notion of “dunce-in-chief”. )

But what did Obama actually mean by worrying about using the word victory?  I wasn’t sure and asked my husband ( a true history buff) what he thought…and he said (paraphrased) that Obama likely meant because of the nature of who we are fighting and the circumstances, we may not know exactly what “victory” looks like immediately or even for 5 to 10 years.  We would not see a leader signing surrender documents in the heart of Afghanistan, for example.

OK fair enough…makes sense at some level.  I would further argue that victory can be used in the context of securing the country, killing terrorists, and eliminating/reducing attacks on our troops and at home.    It doesn’t have to mean formal white flag, ship-signing salute…..

But that got me to thinking…if Obama TRULY believes that using the term “victory” is worrisome, then how come Obama himself declared during the campaign last July that “This is a war that we have to WIN”?  From Sweetness and Light:

Contending that the U.S. is not pursuing a sound strategy for keeping Americans safe, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Tuesday that fighting al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan would be his top priority after ending the war in Iraq.

“This is a war that we have to win,”Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery at the International Trade Center in Washington.

So what kind of dumb-fuddled psychology is it that Obama has used to declare we MUST “win” the war in Afghanistan, but for that same war in the present time he worries about using the term “victory“?

My take?

Now that Obama is no longer in campaign mode with a need to “moderate” his rhetoric, we have the Obama-American-Apologist persona rearing its ugly head in his inability to talk about a victory in Afghanistan….even while the lives of American men and women are at stake over there….the same brave Americans who believe their mission is VICTORY!

The troops and Americans here at home believe we can be victorious in our fight against terrorists advancing their agenda in Afghanistan, in efforts to secure the country, in eliminating attacks against our mainland and more…..there is always victory to be had at some level….why is that so hard to say?  Especially for a American President?

And just so you know….I looked up the official definitions of win and victory, both words Obama used….They are almost interchangeable in various forms and mean essentially the same thing…..

From Merriam-Webster:

Victory:  1 : the overcoming of an enemy or antagonist 2 : achievement of mastery or success in a struggle or endeavor against odds or difficulties

Win: 2b:to be the victor in <won the war> 1: to gain the victory in a contest

Now  think back to a few days after inauguration when Obama met with Republicans to talk about tax policy.  From Fox News (my emphasis):

During his private meeting with congressional Democrats and Republicans on Friday, President Obama ended a philosophical debate over tax policy with the simple declaration that his opinion prevailed because “I WON.”

I guess when you are a narcissistic, inexperienced, egotistical American Presidential Apologist it isn’t so worrisome to declare “victory” when referring to yourself.

Jon Voight: Let’s help bring an end to (the power of) this false prophet, Obama

At the NRSC-NRCC fund raiser last night, Jon Voight spoke truth in 10 minutes about Israel, Obama and his partners in crime tearing America down, the Left’s lies about Bush, and more.

Priceless to see one from Hollywood who understands Obama’s power grabs, his history, his associations and then have to the guts to speak truth to it.  Thanks for Jon Voight!
