Classic: Herman Cain circa 1994 puts the hurt on Bill Clinton’s arrogance and health plan

Herman Cain - GOP 2012 Presidential hopeful (Pic: Harold Daniels, The Atlantic)

On the heels of Herman Cain’s good performance in Thursday’s debate and his landslide victory in the Florida straw poll on Saturday, much attention is being focused on him.

That focus includes this 1990’s era video depicting Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, asking a question about healthcare costs at a Bill Clinton townhall when Clinton was President. This exchange took place in 1994 during Clinton’s big push for the disaster government health plan that was “Hillarycare”.

Herman Cain certainly puts the hurt on Bill Clinton’s health plan in this video.  Not only that, watch the entire video and you see the arrogance of Clinton and his viewpoint ( and most big government liberals)

Basically Herman Cain discusses how Clinton’s healthcare initiative for business was not doable and, without going into it, how it can not be sustained without job losses and some businesses leaving the market entirely.

(If the video doesn’t play, you can go to the video here.)

What is interesting is how Clinton professes to tell Cain that if all businesses have to endure the extra cost of Hillarycare, then they’ll essentially all be in the same boat.  Cain quite clearly and respectfully states how that thinking is inaccurate and, for his business alone, would require 3 times the “top line sales” to meet the costs and maintain their meager profit.

The Atlantic article on Cain from March, 2011 actually goes further basically calling Cain the saboteur of Clinton’s ill-informed healthcare aims:

In 1994, Cain, then still CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, participated in a town-hall meeting that Bill Clinton held to drum up support for his flagging health-care plan. He challenged the president’s claim that restaurateurs would bear only a marginal new cost. Clinton objected, but Cain wouldn’t relent. “I’d had my financial people run the numbers,” he told me. The Wall Street Journal published them, and after Clinton’s plan collapsed, Newsweek identified Cain as one of its “saboteurs”—a badge of honor, especially among conservatives today.

This video is good for many reasons:

1) It shows the business understanding and knowledge of Herman Cain.

2) It shows the arrogance of Bill Clinton and, thus, his wife who tried and failed at a healthcare takeover.

3) It gives a good reminder why we don’t need either Clinton, Bill or Hillary, ever running this country again.

4) It gives a clear view of the liberal mindset on big government.  i.e. Force the business to provide healthcare they can’t afford and just ask the business to raise their prices “like everyone” else in order to cover the mandated government cost.  No thought to job loss, market dynamics, profit margin, nor the choices of the company….government should have the say.  That’s how these people think.

Frankly, it occurred to me while watching the video…Clinton dares to tell a CEO that they can simply charge more for their services (in so many words) which inevitably leads to more money out of the pockets of consumers.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a pizza company or a semiconductor business….the price of products have a great chance of increasing when government makes mandates on that company.

So, why have the government involved at all?  Clinton believes that consumers can bear those extra costs for products and services.  So why doesn’t he just ask the consumer to pay for their own healthcare?  Of course, Clinton is not taking into account any market dynamics that will change when costs are raised….but if he really thinks the consumer has that much “extra cash” couldn’t they just buy their own healthcare, if they wish, in the free market and forget all of the regulations on the business?

We all know the answer.  Hillarycare, just like Obamacare, was all about government controls, not about affordable healthcare.  Funneling that “extra cash” through the business via government mandates is THE solution in the mind of a liberal.  Better yet, funneling that extra cash to the government is ideal in the liberal’s world.

It never occurs to the liberal that the consumer pays either way….and what a cost it is!

Republican DEM-olition of 2010: The Winners and Losers

FORMER. Speaker. Nancy. Pelosi.

Has a ring to it doesn’t it? Those are four of the best words I’ve heard in the last 24 hours.

The Republican’s overwhelmingly swung the House of Representatives Majority away from the Dems to make it a roughly 240+ seat house for the GOP.

While some of the candidates we wanted to win did not, there were certainly many who did.  And the Gubernatorial elections have taken a huge swing in the GOP direction….30+ Republican governorships!

MAKE NO MISTAKE.  Don’t adhere to the Democratic/Leftist media spin……

This was a HUGE, RED tsunami wave that just swept over Obama and his enabling Democratic party.   Yesterday’s was a historic election…bigger than the most recent Republican wipeout of Dems in 1994 — Bigger than any election in decades.

I thought I would compile the Winners and Losers of yesterdays elections….not just the individual candidates, but the issues, groups and others included:

WINNERS:

The American People:  Freedom to have your vote counted.  Many people throughout our history have made great effort and sacrifice for our opportunity to vote. And, in this case, the sweeping wins by conservatives is a major battle won in the continuing war against the Socialist agenda.  A big step in getting our country back!

The Tea Party: The Tea Parties, which moved into full swing shortly after the  Obama/Pelosi/Reid Socialist cabal’s arrogant overreach, were the most influential group in this election.  Without them, I think it is inarguable that many Americans would not have had the voice, nor the knowledge behind their votes, that they possessed in this election!

Republicans60+ seats gained in House for a Majority of 240+,  added 6+ seats in Senate (avg in off-year elections is around 3-4 seats), Republicans gained 9+ governorships and will now hold 30+ Governor seats; Republicans have added  23 MORE States where Republicans gained control of all or part of their Legislatures

The majority of states that now have Republican Governors (30+):  Key wins include Ohio, Florida, Arizona, Iowa, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin.

The majority of states that now have GOP legislatures!

Minorities and Women:   What was that you said, Democrats?  What was it all those Leftists have kept repeating?  Republicans are what?  Racist??  Racist,  you say?   Well, the proof is in the pudding…A LARGE number of GOP winners yesterday are minorities and/or women –  including Marco Rubio (FL), Nikki Haley(SC), Allen West (FL), Susana Martinez (NM), Brian Sandoval (NV), Tim Scott (SC), Bill Flores(TX), Francsico Canseco (WA), David Rivera (FL), Mary Fallin (OK), Kristi Noem (SD).

State of Oklahoma: The first woman Governor of Oklahoma, GOP’s Mary Fallin, was elected.  Tom Coburn was overwhelmingly re-elected.  And the people of the great state of Oklahoma covered a lot of good ground on ballot issues:

  •  voted to keep Sharia Law out of the courts
  •  voted to make English the common language of the state
  • voted for term limits in state positions
  • voted AGAINST a teacher’s union effort to dramatically increase spending on education with no clear allocations nor budgets to cover it
  • voted to allow Oklahomans to opt out of Obamacare mandates, and
  • voted for photo ID before voting in elections.

Citizens of District 8 in FloridaThey ousted liberal, anti-American, rabid, nasty, kook Democrat Alan Grayson from the House!

Citizens of District 22 in Florida (includes Broward and Palm Beach counties):  They elected Allen West, Republican, who is a black, retired Lt. Colonel in the Army.  Staunch conservative and Tea Party candidate.  Go West..give ’em heck in the House!

The People of Iowa:  They voted out 3 state Supreme Court judges who ruled, against the will of the people of Iowa, for same-sex marriage.  Iowa, we all need to follow your lead and clean out those who legislate from the bench!

Sarah Palin:  She has a habit of silencing the critics at almost every turn.  The vast majority of candidates she backed won their races yesterday in this election season.   As of now, of those candidates she endorsed, 7 out of 12 won their races in the Senate this election season and 30 of 43 won in the House.

and now the Losers!

LOSERS:

Now FORMER House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:  Someone threw a bucket of water on the witch of the west!!!    And she has melted!   Her arrogance is a one-way trip back to LaLa Land….have fun Nancy.    Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.  You have been perhaps the worst “leader” in recent history.    GOODBYE and GOOD RIDDANCE.

Democrats:  They are all willful parties in alienating the people from their Constitution. The arrogance, spending, Socialism, Healthcare votes, inability and/or lack of effort to produce a budget, corruption, not reading bills, buying off votes against the will of the American people, lock-step votes behind Socialist Obama….and more.  All have resulted in crashing message from the American People that WE DON”T WANT YOUR ANTI-AMERICAN HOPE AND CHANGE!

Obama:  Regardless of the spin, this election IS a referendum on Obama and his economic policies and his anti-American rhetoric.   Let’s see if Obama has it in him to effect TRUE compromise with the will of the American people.  That will has been realized in  the form of a new House majority and gains in the Senate.  That will is also exhibited in multiple gains in state legislatures by conservatives and a majority of GOP Governorships.  We want change, Obama, but we want a change BACK from your brand of “change”.

Those who have gotten rich or made a career of “representing Americans”:  I use ‘representing” loosely.  Centuries of Democratic seniority was beaten to a pulp in the House last night!

California:  A repeat with Governor Moonbeam Brown…. four more years with the hippie at the helm of California.  Does anybody really believe that Moonbeam will bring fiscal sanity back to California by standing up to public sector unions?  Does anyone really believe that “renewable energy” is California’s future?  If so, then you might be smoking illegal pot.

Pot smokers:  Prop 19 in California and pot referendums in two other states did not pass.  Sorry but you’ll have to keep your pot in the closet for now.

California, again:  Re-electing Babs “Call Me Senator” Boxer and re-electing Loretta Sanchez.

Congressional Reps who voted for ObamacareThey were voted out in droves! (Including the liberal Republican Cao in Lousiana…voted OUT!)

The US Military:  The Democrats have actively worked to keep the military from voting.  What a shame for the very souls who have risked their lives, sacrificed their lives and limb to make sure we can vote.  Count ALL of the votes. (H/T: BigGovernment.com)

The citizens of Alaska:  Enduring Lisa Murkowski and her arrogance in saying she is “doing what the people of Alaska want” certainly doesn’t make for a great experience for the people of Alaska.  Murkowski was beaten by Joe Miller in the primary  and at that point the people had spoken against her.  Instead of losing gracefully, she has forced the citizens to endure a huge legal battle with her “write-in” campaign.  Not to mention that if she is indeed the winner with such a campaign, the question of fraudulent activity committed by her campaign is not an unreasonable one to ask.

The citizens of Nevada, along with the American people:  Gee, thanks, Nevada, for forcing Harry Reid upon all of us for another 6 years.  GAG!  Or should I thank the SEIU, Casino unions, Reid’s corruption, voting machines already marked for Reid, ….?????  You get the picture.   What a travesty to keep this brainless creature in office.  But, then again, as Rush says, having Harry Reid as the face of the Democrats and Obama’s agenda going forward can only help conservatives in the run-up to 2012.

Obamacare:  Presumed new Speaker of the House John Boehner said today he will work to repeal Obamacare!  Get on with it complete dismantling of this monstrosity.

Joy Behar:  She was already a loser before the election yesterday.  I am just including her because she is like fingers on a chalkboard to most reasonable, intelligent Americans.   She is an intolerant, arrogant leftist (are there any other kind?).  When she points the finger and calls others a B^&* , she must remember that at the same time she has 3 fingers pointing back at her.

America, our war against the statist, anti-Constitutionalist, anti-Americans has just begun with a victory in yesterday’s battle.

We are a center-right country.  The idea of standing up for the Constitution and our conservative, traditional roots is the centrist/moderate position in this country.  Don’t let the wishy-washy “moderates” tell you any different.

If you are anywhere to the left of freedom, free markets, and our Constitution, then you are the extremist.

Americans fighting for and standing up for liberty are in the centrist position and we took a HUGE step in moving our country back to the Constitutional, free-America position yesterday.

Kudos to you patriots who have fought the fight and won, decisively, the first battle.

I love this country and I’m proud of it.  God Bless America.

Obamacare Waivers: Is it about healthcare or control?

We are now learning that Healthcare Czar Kathleen Sebelius has granted waivers to several companies (and UNIONS!) so that they will not have to adhere to the laws and mandates of Obamacare.  Included are McDonalds, Jack In The Box, and ….. unions.

The biggest single waiver, for 351,000 people, was for the the United Federation of Teachers Welfare Fund, a New York union providing coverage for city teachers.

The Heritage Foundation sums up the Obamacare monstrosity very well today:

When it comes to the health care sector, Obamacare has turned Secretary Sebelius into judge, jury, and executioner. And we are just beginning to witness the scope of Obamacare’s bureaucratic powers.

Just step back a minute — Wasn’t this golden age of Obamacare going to bring long life, never-ending care, and multitudes of benefits to the masses?   So then, how is it that the promise-filled Obama administration is now awarding waivers that stifle the very elements touted about Obamacare?

As Thomas Lifson at American Thinker put it:

When it became known McDonald’s would drop a health coverage option for tens of thousands of its workers, ObamaCare advocates, who had bought the propaganda that “you will be able to keep your existing plan if you’re happy with it”, were seriously embarrassed.

But back to the basics…why the waivers?

From the New York Times:

As Obama administration officials put into place the first major wave of changes under the health care legislation, they have tried to defuse stiffening resistance — from companies like McDonald’s and some insurers — by granting dozens of waivers to maintain even minimal coverage far below the new law’s standards.

The waivers have been issued in the last several weeks as part of a broader strategic effort to stave off threats by some health insurers to abandon markets, drop out of the business altogether or refuse to sell certain policies.

So, basically, best case,  the waivers are another result of a poorly written bill that was not thought out in full.  Worst case, this is just more manipulation and control that foreshadows things to come in healthcare in America.  This is the result of “Passing a Bill to see what’s in it”.

Gee, I guess some “pre-existing condition” soul out there just got shucked by the hucksters in Washington.  What a surprise coming from the Thugocracy now in power.

Erick Erickson at RedState.com summed it up like this:

The reality here is that this will perpetuate Obama policies in furtherance of John Edwards’ two Americas — those with the connections and power to get out from under the yoke of the law and those that cannot.

The law and the waivers will pit entrepreneurs against armies of well paid lobbyists giving a competitive advantage, yet again, to big businesses.

That’s Obama’s America

As I and many have surmised before, Obamacare is about control not healthcare.  I found this Ayn Rand quote from a commenter at RedState.com.  I am currently reading Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged and these non-objective actions by the Obama administration are straight from the Atlas plot.

When men are caught in the trap of non-objective law, when their work, future and livelihood are at the mercy of a bureaucrat’s whim, when they have no way of knowing what unknown “influence” will crack down on them for which unspecified offense, fear becomes their basic motive, if they remain in the industry at all—and compromise, conformity, staleness, dullness, the dismal grayness of the middle-of-the-road are all that can be expected of them. Independent thinking does not submit to bureaucratic edicts, originality does not follow “public policies,” integrity does not petition for a license, heroism is not fostered by fear, creative genius is not summoned forth at the point of a gun.

Non-objective law is the most effective weapon of human enslavement: its victims become its enforcers and enslave themselves.

  –Ayn Rand

We hear all about “fear” driving the actions of consumers right now.  Many bureaucrats today are touting the “fear” or “out of touch” meme insinuating that the public is just misinformed or not aware of the (so-called good) “changes” taking place.

But I think Ayn Rand was accurate in stating that when business/consumers are controlled by the bureaucrats whims, then fear becomes the motive of their actions

It is not Fox News, it is not the “right”, not Sarah Palin, not misinformation….but it is the raw grab of power and shredding of our Constitutional rights that induces fear and therefore the resulting actions of the American people today.

It has been suggested by clearer minds over the past year that Obamacare was also intended by the socialist bureaucrats as a step towards fully government-controlled healthcare.  Intelligent individuals can argue that when additional cost is forced upon insurers through Obamacare mandates, one can rightfully conclude that the government is pushing the insurers out of business.  Again, Ayn Rand touched on the fact that when bureaucrats force controls on business at their discretion, the businesses may not “remain in the industry at all”.

Why it’s almost as if Obamacare is designed to kill the healthcare insurance industry…?!?!

Worse yet….this law and its “non-objective” choosing of the winners and losers, strikes hard at the American notion of the “rule of law”.  Why does the Obama administration get to choose who wins and loses in healthcare?

Lifson also writes:

ObamaCare is an even bigger disaster for America than previously suspected, going beyond merely wrecking the health care sector. It is changing the rule of law, the sacred principle of our political economy, into rule by government favor…..

……This approach is an outrage. Why are the politically-connected and high profile granted an exemption? What about everyone else? What happened to equal treatment under the law?…..

…The lesson being taught to American business is that you’d better hope the authorities in DC smile upon you. If so, the worst provisions of the law won’t harm you as much as they will your less favored competitors.

Ed Morrisey at HotAir.com writes about this also:

The Rule of Law depends on an environment with clear regulation and unbiased enforcement……..Now, the White House has added arbitrary enforcement to uncertain regulation and opaque processes.  This is not the Rule of Law, but the Whim of Autocracy.

Bottom line…..Obamacare is an affront to our freedoms, our Constitution and the Rule of Law.  Vote every bum out that voted for this bureaucratic atrocity.

It simply comes down to this (via Heritage Foundation):

Through Obamacare, progressives wanted to redistribute wealth through a distant, patronizing welfare state that regulates more and more of the economy, politics and society.

The question Americans face is: Are we a country ruled by law or by a bureaucrat?

Vote November 2…..and get all of your friends and family out to vote.   Support the rule of law and our Constitution….vote for those who will follow both!

Krauthammer: The Last Refuge of a Liberal

This piece has been out for a few days, but I haven’t had a chance to add it to my blog until now.

Charles Krauthammer skewers the libs and their repetitive cries of “bigotry” against those who dare to disagree and actively work against their statist, collectivist, and controlling agenda.

I am going to cover Krauthammer’s last paragraph first…because it is priceless in its ability to call out the Dems for what they are:

The Democrats are going to get beaten badly in November. Not just because the economy is ailing. And not just because Obama over-read his mandate in governing too far left. But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.

I am a PROUD member of the great unwashed…and I can’t wait to wash the floor with these hypocritical elites in November!

To begin, Krauthammer points out the Obama/liberal agenda and its fall from grace:

Liberalism under siege is an ugly sight indeed. Just yesterday it was all hope and change and returning power to the people. But the people have proved so disappointing. Their recalcitrance has, in only 19 months, turned the predicted 40-year liberal ascendancy (James Carville) into a full retreat. Ah, the people, the little people, the small-town people, the “bitter” people, as Barack Obama in an unguarded moment once memorably called them, clinging “to guns or religion or” — this part is less remembered — “antipathy toward people who aren’t like them.”…….That’s a polite way of saying: clinging to bigotry.

Yep, the “hope” and “change” of 2008 has turned into the “Nope” and “Power change” of 2010….thank God, the American people have not ALL swallowed the Obama administration’s false “hope” and his  intent to change our country and move it forever away from our Founding Documents and the intents of our Founders.

Sure, our country has slowly been sliding away from its Founding principles for  years, but the advent of Obama and an unchecked Democratic Congress has rapidly shown the Progressive/Liberal collectivism, relativism, and globalism for what it is…..destruction of our country on a grand scale.   And America doesn’t like it.

Thank God Almighty the comfortable masses are awakening in this midst of this daily nightmare.

Krauthammer continues:

And promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking.

— Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.

— Disgust and alarm with the federal government’s unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.

— Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.

— Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.

Now we know why the country has become “ungovernable,” last year’s excuse for the Democrats’ failure of governance: Who can possibly govern a nation of racist, nativist, homophobic Islamophobes?

Note what connects these issues. In every one, liberals have lost the argument in the court of public opinion. Majorities — often lopsided majorities — oppose President Obama’s social-democratic agenda (e.g., the stimulus, Obamacare), support the Arizona law, oppose gay marriage and reject a mosque near Ground Zero.

Not to mention our disgust at the new power czar structure Obama has put in place; massive deficits, spending, and debt; Obama’s hypocritical flip-flop/credit-taking on the Iraq War success; Congress’ inability to read monstrous bill’s before passing them; and deeming anything from healthcare to budgets as passed–without debate and bipartisan input.

I have no empathy for those who ASK to play in politics. Obama ASKED for the job of President and Pelosi/Reid slobbered all over their constituents awaiting their turn at grand power.

When they signed up for it, the American people came as part of the package. Resorting to calling them bigots, classifying them as terrorists, racists, and Islamophobes when they disagree shows the smallness of the individuals doing the name-calling.

Let’s take the Tea Party:

The most venerable of these trumps is, of course, the race card. When the Tea Party arose, a spontaneous, leaderless and perfectly natural (and traditionally American) reaction to the vast expansion of government intrinsic to the president’s proudly proclaimed transformational agenda, the liberal commentariat cast it as a mob of angry white yahoos disguising their antipathy to a black president by cleverly speaking in economic terms.

Arizona’s SB1070 immigration law:

Then came Arizona and S.B. 1070. It seems impossible for the left to believe that people of good will could hold that: (a) illegal immigration should be illegal, (b) the federal government should not hold border enforcement hostage to comprehensive reform, i.e., amnesty, (c) every country has the right to determine the composition of its immigrant population.

And California’s Proposition 8….passed by a vote of the PEOPLE, overturned by a rogue judge:

As for Proposition 8, is it so hard to see why people might believe that a single judge overturning the will of 7 million voters is an affront to democracy? And that seeing merit in retaining the structure of the most ancient and fundamental of all social institutions is something other than an alleged hatred of gays particularly since the opposite-gender requirement has characterized virtually every society in all the millennia until just a few years ago?

And the latest atrocity — the Ground Zero mosque:

…The intelligentsia is near unanimous that the only possible grounds for opposition is bigotry toward Muslims. This smug attribution of bigotry to two-thirds of the population hinges on the insistence on a complete lack of connection between Islam and radical Islam, a proposition that dovetails perfectly with the Obama administration’s pretense that we are at war with nothing more than “violent extremists” of inscrutable motive and indiscernible belief. Those who reject this as both ridiculous and politically correct (an admitted redundancy) are declared Islamophobes, the ad hominem du jour.

In summary, Krauthammer says:

It is a measure of the corruption of liberal thought and the collapse of its self-confidence that, finding itself so widely repudiated, it resorts reflexively to the cheapest race-baiting (in a colorful variety of forms). Indeed, how can one reason with a nation of pitchfork-wielding mobs brimming with “antipathy toward people who aren’t like them” — blacks, Hispanics, gays and Muslims — a nation that is, as Michelle Obama once put it succinctly, “just downright mean”?

I am afraid Mistress Michelle is soon going to see just HOW downright mean we can be when retaliating against the constant poking of her husband’s anti-American agenda every…single…day.

November 2….A day that will live in infamy.

IBD: 20 Ways ObamaCare Will Take Away Our Freedom

From IBD, a succinct summary of freedoms lost under Obamacare are below…..at least the first 20 freedoms…there are  many more in reality.

From Investors Business Daily:

….We may be about to live Benjamin Franklin’s adage, “People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.”

The sections described below are taken from HR 3590 as agreed to by the Senate and from the reconciliation bill as displayed by the Rules Committee.

1. You are young and don’t want health insurance? You are starting up a small business and need to minimize expenses, and one way to do that is to forego health insurance? Tough. You have to pay $750 annually for the “privilege.” (Section 1501)

2. You are young and healthy and want to pay for insurance that reflects that status? Tough. You’ll have to pay for premiums that cover not only you, but also the guy who smokes three packs a day, drink a gallon of whiskey and eats chicken fat off the floor. That’s because insurance companies will no longer be able to underwrite on the basis of a person’s health status. (Section 2701).

3. You would like to pay less in premiums by buying insurance with lifetime or annual limits on coverage? Tough. Health insurers will no longer be able to offer such policies, even if that is what customers prefer. (Section 2711).

4. Think you’d like a policy that is cheaper because it doesn’t cover preventive care or requires cost-sharing for such care? Tough. Health insurers will no longer be able to offer policies that do not cover preventive services or offer them with cost-sharing, even if that’s what the customer wants. (Section 2712).

5. You are an employer and you would like to offer coverage that doesn’t allow your employers’ slacker children to stay on the policy until age 26? Tough. (Section 2714).

6. You must buy a policy that covers ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment; prescription drugs; rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices; laboratory services; preventive and wellness services; chronic disease management; and pediatric services, including oral and vision care.

You’re a single guy without children? Tough, your policy must cover pediatric services. You’re a woman who can’t have children? Tough, your policy must cover maternity services. You’re a teetotaler? Tough, your policy must cover substance abuse treatment. (Add your own violation of personal freedom here.) (Section 1302).

7. Do you want a plan with lots of cost-sharing and low premiums? Well, the best you can do is a “Bronze plan,” which has benefits that provide benefits that are actuarially equivalent to 60% of the full actuarial value of the benefits provided under the plan. Anything lower than that, tough. (Section 1302 (d) (1) (A))

8. You are an employer in the small-group insurance market and you’d like to offer policies with deductibles higher than $2,000 for individuals and $4,000 for families? Tough. (Section 1302 (c) (2) (A).

9. If you are a large employer (defined as at least 101 employees) and you do not want to provide health insurance to your employee, then you will pay a $750 fine per employee (It could be $2,000 to $3,000 under the reconciliation changes). Think you know how to better spend that money? Tough. (Section 1513).

10. You are an employer who offers health flexible spending arrangements and your employees want to deduct more than $2,500 from their salaries for it? Sorry, can’t do that. (Section 9005 (i)).

11. If you are a physician and you don’t want the government looking over your shoulder? Tough. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to use your claims data to issue you reports that measure the resources you use, provide information on the quality of care you provide, and compare the resources you use to those used by other physicians. Of course, this will all be just for informational purposes. It’s not like the government will ever use it to intervene in your practice and patients’ care. Of course not. (Section 3003 (i))

12. If you are a physician and you want to own your own hospital, you must be an owner and have a “Medicare provider agreement” by Feb. 1, 2010. (Dec. 31, 2010 in the reconciliation changes.) If you didn’t have those by then, you are out of luck. (Section 6001 (i) (1) (A))

13. If you are a physician owner and you want to expand your hospital? Well, you can’t (Section 6001 (i) (1) (B). Unless, it is located in a country where, over the last five years, population growth has been 150% of what it has been in the state (Section 6601 (i) (3) ( E)). And then you cannot increase your capacity by more than 200% (Section 6001 (i) (3) (C)).

14. You are a health insurer and you want to raise premiums to meet costs? Well, if that increase is deemed “unreasonable” by the Secretary of Health and Human Services it will be subject to review and can be denied. (Section 1003)

15. The government will extract a fee of $2.3 billion annually from the pharmaceutical industry. If you are a pharmaceutical company what you will pay depends on the ratio of the number of brand-name drugs you sell to the total number of brand-name drugs sold in the U.S. So, if you sell 10% of the brand-name drugs in the U.S., what you pay will be 10% multiplied by $2.3 billion, or $230,000,000. (Under reconciliation, it starts at $2.55 billion, jumps to $3 billion in 2012, then to $3.5 billion in 2017 and $4.2 billion in 2018, before settling at $2.8 billion in 2019 (Section 1404)). Think you, as a pharmaceutical executive, know how to better use that money, say for research and development? Tough. (Section 9008 (b)).

16. The government will extract a fee of $2 billion annually from medical device makers. If you are a medical device maker what you will pay depends on your share of medical device sales in the U.S. So, if you sell 10% of the medical devices in the U.S., what you pay will be 10% multiplied by $2 billion, or $200,000,000. Think you, as a medical device maker, know how to better use that money, say for R&D? Tough. (Section 9009 (b)).

The reconciliation package turns that into a 2.9% excise tax for medical device makers. Think you, as a medical device maker, know how to better use that money, say for research and development? Tough. (Section 1405).

17. The government will extract a fee of $6.7 billion annually from insurance companies. If you are an insurer, what you will pay depends on your share of net premiums plus 200% of your administrative costs. So, if your net premiums and administrative costs are equal to 10% of the total, you will pay 10% of $6.7 billion, or $670,000,000. In the reconciliation bill, the fee will start at $8 billion in 2014, $11.3 billion in 2015, $1.9 billion in 2017, and $14.3 billion in 2018 (Section 1406).Think you, as an insurance executive, know how to better spend that money? Tough.(Section 9010 (b) (1) (A and B).)

18. If an insurance company board or its stockholders think the CEO is worth more than $500,000 in deferred compensation? Tough.(Section 9014).

19. You will have to pay an additional 0.5% payroll tax on any dollar you make over $250,000 if you file a joint return and $200,000 if you file an individual return. What? You think you know how to spend the money you earned better than the government? Tough. (Section 9015).

That amount will rise to a 3.8% tax if reconciliation passes. It will also apply to investment income, estates, and trusts. You think you know how to spend the money you earned better than the government? Like you need to ask. (Section 1402).

20. If you go for cosmetic surgery, you will pay an additional 5% tax on the cost of the procedure. Think you know how to spend that money you earned better than the government? Tough. (Section 9017).

American Thinker: I Love Her, Scars and All

This post today by Frank V. Johnson at American Thinker reminds me of John Wayne’s America, Why I Love Her from the 1970’s.  My mom used to play it on our stereo back in the day.  Back then, I could not have conceived as a young child, how very important our America’s founding, Constitution, and freedom are to our way of life.  But it is all too clear now when threats have been exposed from within that could potentially take it all away.

Perhaps John Wayne’s and Johnson’s thoughts below should be required reading for every American who blindly believes the healthcare bill is about healthcare instead of entitlement, power and revocation of freedom.

The full text of Johnson’s piece:

My love for her has sometimes been called into question, mostly by those who have never found a love of their own. The tell me that I can do better for myself, and that I should expect more from the one I give my heart to. It’s a funny thing, this thing called love. It seems to me that no matter what they have, people by their selfish nature always seem to want more and more, no matter what it costs. But I have found that the love I have for her is something that cannot be shaken by the doubts and criticisms of other people.

She has her scars, and she has her faults, but I knew that going into this relationship. Yeah, she’s a little older than me, and that was always an issue for other people, but I find that there is a certain wisdom that can come only with the passage of time. And since she has seen a lot more in her time than I have seen in mine, I will trust that she might have a better view of things, especially the things I have yet to see for myself.

Now, I have done a lot of things in my life, and I am not so ashamed to admit that of some of those things I am not so proud. She too has her sins, and has also borne the brunt of righteous ridicule. Though we have both committed sins, we have atoned for them and have done more to make them right than those who stand in judgment of our relationship while never admitting their own flaws.

I love her, not only for her well-spoken words and great deeds of charity, but also for the scars she bares, both physical and otherwise. It is her scars and sins that have given her her beauty and tested her resolve.

I ask of her nothing, but she demands my best. When I reach out for her hand, she is always there, not to lift me up or to be my crutch, but to give me the assurance that I can stand on my own. It is that warm yet distant strength, that voice calling me to my feet, that somehow soothes my pain. She, like my mother, will stand on the sideline, cheering me on, but letting me fail or succeed on my own accord. She doesn’t want me to falter, but she knows that with every failure comes the knowledge required to move beyond and to move ahead.

While to me she is one of Gods greatest creations, there are some who would want her to change. They want her to soften her image and cover her scars. They would impose upon her their ideal and remove from her her unique beauty. Those she is presented to would sanitize her past, while in the privacy of like-minded fools, they would sully her soul. They would take from her her potential while dismissing all the good she has done.

What they do not understand is that it is exactly the things they would change that have made her who she is. To say you love is to be accepting. Long has it been the quest of men and women to take and mold into unachievable imagery that which we claim to love unconditionally. That is not love, but desire and infatuation. We cast onto others the shortcomings we see in ourselves and expect things to be something they are not.

For me, love is not something to be twisted and molded, but to be cherished for what it is. Much like the vows of matrimony, we are to love, for better or worse, for richer or poorer. And while she has sometimes given me less than I wanted, she has always given me exactly what I deserved. I can only hope that she gives me the respect and love that I have given to her, but if she falls short of that wish, that is fine, too…because I love her for what she is.

And while you may say to me that I deserve better, I will ask you, “Why?” Is it not good enough that she has given me everything that I need? Is it not good enough that I was blessed to be in her company? It is not by mere good fortune that she has embraced me in her arms and allowed me to strive for everything while asking of me only that I protect her from those who would have me dismiss her. Is it too much for them to understand that she is everything that has filled the dreams of those less fortunate? Is it not enough for them to know that millions and millions would give everything they have for one breath of her, one touch from her loving hand, one glimpse of her radiance, one chance to live in her heart?

What would they have her be? An apologetic, apathetic shell, to be filled with the empty promise of an unattainable utopia? I’m sorry, but that is not love; that is dissatisfaction. And for those so dissatisfied with the one I love that they would destroy everything she is, I have a message…

This is my America, and I love her, scars and all.

Arrogance wins, America loses 219-212 – Thoughts on the bill

Well, our nightmare continues tonight in a big way.  Obama’s “change” has come in the form of takeover of 1/6th more of our economy, increased deficits, rationed healthcare, exponentially more bureaucracy, mandates, exorbitant taxes, and taxpayer-funded abortion, to name a few.

Obamacare, or better referred to as “the destruction of the American healthcare system”, passed the House 219-212 today.  Stupak and the faux pro-lifers in the House caved and voted for the bill which includes taxpayer-funded abortion.  THERE are NO PRO-LIFE CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS and they all lie.

The vote was over two hours ago and I still have a pain deep in the pit of my stomach and my adrenalin is racing….Can’t go to bed.  Why can’t I shake this feeling that something monumental has happened?   Because it has.

Some claim this is just about getting healthcare for everyone…many Americans believe that….but this bill fundamentally changes the way Americans interact and, yes, are controlled by their government:  government access to medical records, government dictates for testing and care you receive, government insurance payment mandates just because you are alive, government is inserted between you and your doctor and insurance provider.

In addition, this bill will press insurance companies to lower premiums and inject sky-rocketing costs due to elimination of pre-existing conditions.    This drastic pressure on revenue coupled with great new costs, placed on top of a measly 3-4% profit, will force insurance companies into bankruptcy or government takeover.   The bill is designed for that – Obama wants the government to BE the provider of “insurance”.

Worse yet, it seems, behind all of this unconstitutional and socialist change,  much of America is still worried about American Idol, manicures, golfing, tattoos, and their next trip to the casino…  It’s not that we can’t continue to live our lives, but we all need to be aware of what is happening to our country.  Read Kitty Werthmann’s story for a great example of what happens when tyrannical change creeps upon a country!

Anyway, to the point of my post….a few notable quotes I’ve found after the healthcare vote tonight:

From RiehlWorldView:

Most importantly, the Democrats are exposed. Obama flushed them out of their hole to save himself. That’s not a hero, it’s a selfish traitor to his party. On top of that, we now have what matters most on the heels of this fiasco – something to fight for. And fight we will.

And we will win in the end. Too many solid citizens were already up in arms, taking to the streets before this. Those numbers will not shrink. They will grow exponentially. As the saying goes, this is not the beginning of the end. It is the end of the beginning.

Let them have their self-congratulatory night and day or two. They’ve been drunk on power and ideology throughout this debate. Kicking the snot out of them when their hangover sets in – and it will –  may be the political highlight of many of our lives.

I am on board for ‘Kicking the snot out ’em” — metaphorically speaking, of course.  Let’s roll.

From Barack Obama himself, the anointed one,via Michelle Malkin:

It’s “another stone laid in the foundation of the American dream.”

And as I wrote in the comments at Malkin’s blog

This coming from the guy who didn’t set foot in the contiguous states until the age of 18, went to school on affirmative action while admitting he befriended Marxists and anti-Americans in college, worked at “community organizing”, and lied his way into the Presidency.

He wouldn’t know or understand the American dream if it bit him in #$S.”

AND Paul Ryan handed it to them tonight on the House floor, by simply espousing truth:

America is not just a nationality. It’s not just a massive land from Hawaii to Maine from Wisconsin to Florida. America is an idea. It’s the most pro-human idea ever designed by mankind. Our Founders got it right when they wrote in the Declaration of Independence that our rights come from nature and nature’s God, not from government.

Should we now subscribe to an ideology where government creates rights and is solely responsible for delivering these artificial rights and then rations these rights? Do we believe that the goal of government is to promote equal opportunity for all Americans to make the most of their lives or do we now believe that government’s role is to equalize the results of people’s lives?

The philosophy advanced on this floor by this majority today is so paternalistic and so arrogant, it’s condescending and it tramples upon the principles that have made America so exceptional.

My friends, we are fast approaching a tipping point where more Americans depend upon the Federal Government than upon themselves for their livelihood, a point where we, the American People, trade in our commitment and our concern for our individual liberties in exchange for government benefits and dependencies.

Fight on my fellow lovers of free America.  This isn’t over!
