Battle Hymn of the Republic – US Army Chorus

UPDATE 4/18/08: I’ve listened to this several times since I posted it. (Seems many of you have also…thanks)  This line keeps going through my mind…how appropriate in this day!

As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,

While God is marching on.

I wonder if this could stir the Obama’s as it stirs me and other America-lovers???…see if you can listen to it without having a lump of pride in your throat!

  1. Great video.

  2. Awesome–thanks for posting this–it brought tears–I love it!

  3. Beautiful! Thank you!

  4. That was the most imperssive rendittion of The Battle Hymn of the Republic that I have ever heard, it brought a tear to my eye. I have not been as moved by a rendition of that song since we sang it at my grandfathers funeral. It was his favorite song, he used to sing it over th intercom of his B-17 to his crew while flying over Europe in WWII. I am gald that the Army Choir and The Marine Corps Band performed it as well as they did and The Holy Father enjoy it so much.

  5. Absolutely magnificent. It’s so gerat to be an American.

    Thank you a lot.

  6. We have absolutely the most wonderful men in our armed services and always have! Unlike some who have never been proud of her country, I am always proud and so happy that the world can see our pride and our patriotism! And then to have the Holy Father there was just too fabulous. As the daughter of a Korean POW war vet and the mother-in-law of a Navy man today, God Bless America!

  7. This is something we should never forget- Freedom is not free. God Bless America!!!

    Thank you.

  8. With all the chaos all around us we better

return to the God of all creation and remember

to whom this land and country was dedicated too.

before we end up destroying and that good about this

    United States of America.

And live up to are motto:”

    “In God We Trust”

  9. Being an ARMY dad, I know exactly how Proud their Families are today. HOOOOOAH to the US ARMY!

  10. WOW, I am so glad I found this so my husband could hear it. I was blown away by this song and the way it was performed by the Army Band. Praise GOD!!!! I heard it on T.V. and also on Rush’s show. He plays it over and over. Everytime I hear it I get goose bumps all over. If any American hears this and is not touched, then I don’t know what flows through their veins. Can you tell me how to save this on our computer??? Thanks, Edie

  11. WOW Just Amazing , stirred in my soul, can not stop playing it

    Thank you

  12. More jingoistic propaganda! ;)

  13. If you are not a patriot in your heart, your head can not tell you how this performance affects us.

  14. MY DAD GRADUATED FROM WEST POINT IN 1930 AND HE AND MY MOM ARE BURIED IN THE OLD CADET CEMEMTERY THERE. DAD WAS GEN. MARK EDWARD BRADLEY, A 4-STAR WHO RETIRED AFTER 35 YEARS OF SERVICE. I LOVE THIS PRESENTATION FROM THE ARMY CHORUS!

  15. Heard this magnificent rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”.Just can’t find the right adjective to describe it. I will tell you this, It was hair raising. I love America and thank the US Army Corps for doing such a beautiful job.

We had better elect a President who respects life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There is one candidate who doesn’t.

  16. Lorraine,
I felt the same way hearing this rendition….and I feel the same way about the elecion!

  17. Wonderful rendition of this historic hymn.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic is an old liberal, abolitionist song written by Julia Ward Howe in November 1861 and first published in The Atlantic Monthly on 1 February 1862, that became popular during the American Civil War. Yes, that Atlantic Monthly, you know, the liberal one that is a little older than The Nation (1865), that other famous liberal rag.

In 1863 it was used by the Supervisory Committee for Recruiting Colored Regiments in Philadelphia. Martin Luther King Jr. used parts of the lyrics in several sermons and speeches. It is famous for it’s use in the ‘liberation’ of the downtrodden.

Judy Garland sang it on TV in memory of JFK after his death.

Barack Obama may play it at his inauguration to commemorate it’s use since 1861 as a hymn of liberation and freedom.

  18. In the late 40s and in the 50s this was the first tune you had to learn if you were in the band or took music. at the high school I went to . It was and is a beautiful song.

  19. GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST!!

  20. G’Day I live in Adelaide South Australia and born here as well.
Every time I hear the Battle Hymm of the Republic it puts tears in my eyes.
And makes me feel Great! And I am not American ok. A Good Aussie guy!

  21. G’Day The Battle Hymm of the Republic makes me feel wonderful.
I am born here in Australia, and I am not American ok

  22. here is the best rendition of the battle hymn I have ever heard sung by Judy Garland after President Kennedy was shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Xz7WV_qJs.

I am not sure why Obama wouldn’t be stirred. The song really is a song that fits well with Obama. His ability to find truth and justictice is really profound.

    1) Helping millions of Americans get health care.
    2) Cleaning up the environment such as the oil spill.
    3) Standing up for Mexican Americans that some people want to unfairly harass based on their ethnicity.
    4) Standing up all Americans right to worship the religion of their choice. Such as standing up for the rights of the Muslims in lower Manhattan that want to worship.
    5) Working on comprehensive immigration reform so that all people can work for a fair wage.
    6) Working on allowing all men and women serve in our military even if they are gay.

I have to say, Obama’s agenda, isn’t just an agenda. This is truly a religious mission. These are things that we have to do not just because our Constitution demands that we do them. We must march forward with these things because this is the will of God. Like all of the dead patriots such as Lincoln and Martin Luther King that let blood in order to fight for the principals of our great nation, we too must be willing to sacrifice to ensure justice.

    Glory Glory Hallelujah.

  23. Robert,
I agree …a good rendition. Thanks for posting it.

Not clear, however on the rest of your post as to whether you believe “Obama is marching on” or “God is marching on….”

    1) Helping FORCING millions of Americans get health care - mandated by government with threat of fines. High cost and rationing of healthcare are proven facts in other countries that have aspired to let government become their doctor. Forced purchase of government run healthcare is not “demanded” in the Constitution.
    2) Cleaning up the environment such as the oil spill. – Obama waited weeks before even addressing this spill much less taking action on the mess in the Gulf. Rather, this occurence was used by the Obama administration less as a lesson in how to clean up a spill and more as a lesson in how to “never let a crisis go to waste” (moratoriums on drilling, demogaguery with regards to BP and oil companies in general.)
    3) Standing up for Mexican Americans that some people want to unfairly harass based on their ethnicity. – Correction: standing against the rule of law so as to add Democrat voters to their rolls.
    4) Standing up all Americans right to worship the religion of their choice. Such as standing up for the rights of the Muslims in lower Manhattan that want to worship. – Correction: Obama clearly took sides here…a side against the American people. Americans believe Muslims are free to worship, but they don’t believe Ground Zero is the place to do it, nor the place to make “better relations”
    5) Working on comprehensive immigration reform so that all people can work for a fair wage. – See #3. Comprehensive Immigration is code word for “undocumented Democrats”.
    6) Working on allowing all men and women serve in our military even if they are gay – Gays are ALL currently allowed to serve in the military. Obama isn’t fighting for that…he’s fighting for a PC social experiment within the military that he so loathes….none of that is “demanded” in the Constitution.
