I’ve had the weekend to mull over the comments that Obama made to the elite San Francisco group last week. To refresh my readers, his comments regarding economic conditions and the reactions of people in “small town Pennsylvania” were:
“It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Of course, he made his (non-apology) apology over the weekend:
…”I didn’t say it as well as I should have…..(it was) a typical sort of political flare-up because I said something that everybody knows is true…..(and later he said)…. “Obviously, if I worded things in a way that made people offended, I deeply regret that”
So the reaction to his statement was just “typical political flare-up” (by “typical” white people, no doubt), but every word was true!?!?! And we all know it because he said so!
Maybe it is hiding there in the same place where Obama is trying to hide his disdain for this country and its people, but no where do I see Obama’s apology
- to those who believe in the 2nd Amendment;
- to those who own guns for many different reasons;
- to those who believe in the God of the Bible and regularly choose to worship him;
- and those who Obama deems as anti-immigrant and racist because they believe in securing the borders and allowing ONLY legal immigration.
Obama is an elitist, arrogant, condescending politician just like most other lefty liberals and he is totally out of touch with Americans. His statements prove that to be the case.
I don’t for a minute even make the connection Obama does between jobs/economics and guns, religion and immigration. But, just for the purpose of making a point, let’s just use that image of Americans CLINGING to their guns, religion, culture and way of life!
Because Obama is so out of touch, he may not even realize he had to make up reasons why Americans would do things for which he doesn’t agree. Obama, may I point out what you didn’t consider? Here is why the average American may, in this day and age, be clinging a little tighter to many elements of their lives:
1) Guns - Obama you are a gun control nut on steroids…your beliefs would have us regulate the 2nd Amendment away. (along with most other liberal Democrats) You continue to stick to the notion that all guns are bad and the utopia is making the gun owner the criminal.
In light of that fact, many Americans, in order to defend themselves and their families believe in what I call the“Heston Doctrine”: FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!
Obama, many Americans follow that doctrine and it has nothing to do with economics and jobs and everything to do with your ideology!
2) Religion – Those of deep religious faith, and particularly Christians, don’t worship because of some economic policy. Faith is derived and practiced for many reasons: religious background, true belief in the God of the Bible, life experiences, and more. For most, Christianity is a deeply held belief based on God’s Word in the Bible and backed by years of historical documentation. In addition, our country and laws were founded on Judeo-Christian principles.
Most of us don’t hold your Marxist views about religion. From NewsBusters:
Karl Marx (1843) says: Religion is the opiate of the masses.
Barack Obama (2008) says: It’s not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to . . . religion . . . as a way to explain their frustrations.
Obama , your moral relativism and Marxism is offensive to many Americans. When you and those of your liberal stripes passionately defend abominations to God (abortion, homosexuality, prayer stricken from schools, Christian beliefs made second class to secuarlism and more), or accuse those of faith that they are weak or religion is a “drug”, we are offended and threatened….
Perhaps these are reasons we CLING to our religion vigorously?
3) Antipathy to those unlike us or against illegal immigration – I suppose you could look in the mirror Obama, for the definition of antipathy to those unlike you. Your statement accusing Americans of “antipathy to those unlike us” is condescending, wrong, and quite ironic given that you have a strong disdain for America, the country and its people.
And, yes, we are clinging to our American culture and way of life….we are clinging to this one for dear life, Obama.
- We see the massive movement to condone illegal immigration and lack of border enforcement as an affront to our way of life and livelihood.
- We see the trend to relegate the English language to secondary status as just plain wrong.
- We see the push for new defintions of “marriage” and “family” as a threat to the stability of our country, not to mention they are 180 degrees out of phase with what God has demanded.
- We see the veracity for which you and others will fight to murder babies in the womb — all in the name of choice!
- We see the inequal justice applied to “hate crimes” where justice is measured based on race and sexual preferences as examples.
I’ve outlined for you where our love of the culture in America isn’t about “those different than us”, Obama, but about the all-out assault on our beliefs, our constitution, our Christianity, and our families.
So, while you were wrong about WHY we are “CLINGING” the fact is, we are clinging tight to many elements of this country and our lives. That is because you, Obama, and those like you, not only want to loosen our grip on the America we know and love, but cut off our fingers in the process.

You were going to vote for Obama to begin with so why are you spouting off at the mouth?
I meant you were *not* going to vote for him. You just want to cash in on the fun because you know Billary will be easier for McVain to beat. The one person McVain doesn’t want to bump oratory skills is with – you guessed it – OBAMA!!!!!
Hey Dianna,
I checked out your blog filled with your vitriol for McCain.
You weren’t going to vote for McCain to begin with so why are you spouting off at the mouth?
A well-organized festival of ignorance! I love it! These are the kinds of attacks that must come from the not-so-sharp right since there’s no substantive, honest policy disagreement that the American people will buy for Barack Obama.
If you honestly think Barack Obama is a threat to America in any way, your understanding of politics and national security are limited and your knowledge of the three remaining candidates is severely lacking.
unastronaut,
Calling others ignorant….check
Delusions of superior knowledge….check
Classifying opposite views as “attacks” ….check
Yep, you must be one of those inclusive, non-judgmental, tolerant liberal Democrats I’m always hearing about!
Again, no delusions. You simply want to call me a liberal Democrat like your cult leader Rush tells you to do. I’m not a liberal Democrat, and you would know that if you knew anything about politics. The only thing I ask you to do is talk about substance and use facts, otherwise don’t call it politics.
unastronaut,
If it looks like a liberal and smells like a liberal…..it is a liberal.
Get over yourself there, spaceman.
I’m a liberal democrat.
Lifelong democrat.
Child of two democrats.
Related to a few communist party members.
Barack Obama is pond scum.
And that is the nicest thing I can say about him.
Barack Obama has accomplished exactly zero with his life — and yet he feels entitled to look down on others.
Barack Obama is a bigot who hates America, women, and people not of his chosen race.
He’s a phony, he’s arrogant, he’s a snob, he’s nothing but history’s most prominent recipient of affirmative action — the largesse of the limousine liberals he was sucking up to in San Francisco when he bashed working class people.
I am enjoying watching Obama go down in flames.
sharprightturn,
Don’t paint EVERY liberal with the same broad brush. There are a few decent ones out there. Joe Lieberman comes to mind as an example. People like “Dianna” and “unasteroid” are simply idiots.
GBS,
A liberal is a liberal. Joe Lieberman just happens to be a gentleman and cordial in his dealings with those who don’t hold his beliefs. He does have a respect for other viewpoints. and in some ways he does not tow the full liberal line…. on the war, for example.
Yes he is a decent one.
However, most of the ones we have to listen to and deal with today are more like Dianna and unasteroid.
I wouldn’t expect a reasonable understanding of Marx from a site titled Sharp Right Turn, but it’s still disappointing to see the flips and twists required to intentionally misread Obama’s comments about rural voters in order to label him a socialist.
What is striking is the the sheer effort required to construct these straw man / ad hominem attacks. I mean…at some point, don’t you pause and think to yourself that perhaps it would be easier to engage the issues fairly and directly? If your political philosophy is worth anything at all, you wouldn’t need to work so hard distorting, misleading and misinterpreting.
cousinavi,
I wouldn’t expect a reasonable debate on the issues from an Obama supporter like you either.
Just attacks on me personally.
It’s just a wild guess, but I’ll bet your fact-finding and political philosophy is so great that you really believe “Bush lied, People died”, too.
Why is it you people on the left think that any words uttered in disagreement to your philosophy or your “person” have been so uttered wihout any thought or facts? If anyone is misleading here it is your man, Obama.
Next time you comment, try to debate facts, not attack those with whom you disagree.
You abandoned honest debate when you gagged up the Marx “opiate of the masses” line and tried to relate it to Obama’s comments.
That IS the issue you raised. Further, I did not attack YOU, personally or otherwise. I took issue with your tactics – accurately described as ad hominem and straw man. Can’t say it’s surprising. You employ dishonest tactics in argument (which, from your response to my comment, you may not even recognize) and then accuse me of using the very same shoddy crap you have so gleefully presented as “facts”.
And, for that matter, the record is clear: Bush DID lie…and that’s putting it mildly. The only out is that he was stupid enough to believe the horseshit that he said. Stupid or evil – take your pick.
Cheers.
cousinavi,
So now you are the arbiter of honest debate???
On second thought, maybe it isn’t your attacks that bother me most, but your arrogance.
You still haven’t given me one fact for why my analysis is not correct…..all you’ve given is some argument on how my tactics are wrong and yours are right.
To debate facts and to be more specific…Karl Marx said this:
“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. ”
Change the words a little and add the economy, guns and immigration issues into the mix and you have almost exactly what Obama said.
I surprised that a fish-walking Darwinian as yourself didn’t get that little commonality!
And if Bush Lied….so did MANY other Democrats….I if you want quotes about the war I’ll provide them!
You didn’t provide any “record” (your word) of how he lied…..
It’s tough to prove something you learned from drinking Koolaid isn’t it?
Again, debate the facts…don’t tell me how right you are and how “stupid”, dishonest, and unfair I am.
“Lie” – A false statement DELIBERATELY presented as being true; a falsehood.
“Bush lied and people died”…a fatuous bumpersticker slogan enabling Lefties to better remember why THEY are so angry and bitter, clinging to their weed and frayed, drool stained copies of Das Kapital.
Some FACTS: Iraq was invaded after a diplomatic, economic, and military conflict that persisted for 12 years after the 1991 cease fire agreement. After 17 UNSCRs and many small-scale military ops, Iraq failed to come clean on their WMD (a condition of the 1991 armistice). Pick a national intelligence organization…the British, the French, the Russians…they all assessed a significant Iraqi WMD capability, which was predominantly chemical weapons supplied by Russia. It’s apparent that the stash got (secretly) destroyed or moved to another country, or it is buried somewhere in that huge expanse of desert. You can use your 20/20 rear-view binocs to debate whether invading Iraq was the right move, but spare us bumper sticker fact-challenged rhetoric.
OBTW…Some quotes that won’t fit on a bumper sticker:
“Saddam Hussein has spent the better part of this decade and much of his nation’s wealth not on providing for the Iraqi people but on developing nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and the missiles to deliver them.”
President Bill Clinton, 1998 SOU
“For nearly a decade, Iraq has defied its obligations to destroy its weapons of terror and the missiles to deliver them. America will continue to contain Saddam, and we will work for the day when Iraq has a government worthy of its people.”
President Bill Clinton, 1999 SOU
GBS,
Cousinavi should take a course from you on laying out the facts!
Thanks.
Let’s face it… we who took offense to Obama’s Marx-esque remarks about religion (i.e. the masses* cling to their religious faith) don’t necessarily conclude that Obama is a Socialist or commie. HOWEVER, he has spilled the beans on his character, nevertheless!! I mean Obama has given us a peek at his utter lack of respect for these rural, blue-collar workers. AND even if his viewpoint had nothing to do with Marx—notwithstanding that his words were essentially the same as Marx—it is SHOCKING to me that a candidate for a world leader would in any circumstance ever show such contempt for someone’s—ANYONE’s—faith. The fact that this came from such a super-skilled orator makes it much more outrageous! I mean, what did Obama say but exactly what Marx said—and meant—which was people turn to their “fix” of religion when things get rough. It is kind of disgusting to say the least. Sorry. there isn’t anything else he could mean and he certainly knew that when he gave a “non”-apology. That’s why there was no real “correction” given by Obama
* (i.e. by masses, i mean the rural people–who all seem to be fair game for bashing by everyone these days, especially where I work in the big apple –Manhattan)
